Carter CLeaning free essay sample
Do you think it is important for Carter Cleaning Company to have a formal grievance process? Why or why not? Certainly it is important for many reasons. First, it is important from a standpoint of justice and fair treatment. Second, the lack of justice and fair treatment is a prime catalyst for union activity. 2. Based on what you know about the Carter Cleaning Company, outline the steps in what you think would be the ideal grievance process for this company. Because it is a small company, it should be simple and short. One suggestion is a two-step process that begins with a written appeal to the store manager. The second step is to send that appeal to Jen and her father for review. 3. In addition to the grievance process, can you think of anything else that Carter Cleaning Company might do to make sure grievances and gripes like this one are expressed and are heard by top management? The grievance procedure is critical. The fairness and justice of the decisionââ¬â¢s result (for instance, did I get an equitable pay raise? Is distributive justice. Procedural justice is the fairness of the process (for instance, is the process my company uses to allocate merit raises fair? ). Most employees probably canââ¬â¢t and wonââ¬â¢t unscramble what is ethical, fair, or just when it comes to how you treat them. [Chapter 14, Ethics, p. 462]. Discipline and dismissal are both major sources of grievances. Carter Cleaning Case 16 1. How should the firm go about identifying hazardous conditions that should be rectified? Use checklists such as those in Figures 16-5 and 16-8 to list At least 10 possible dry-cleaning store hazardous conditions. Basic Hazard Identification Checklist GENERAL WORK AREA 1. Work surfaces and walkways dry or slip resistant, no tripping hazards? Y/N Date Corrected 2. Exterior walkways in good condition? 3. Spills cleaned up immediately? 4. Combustible debris waste stored safely and removed promptly? 5. Dip tanks, etc , cleaned regularly, inspected? 6. Are accumulations of combustible dust routinely removed from enclosed areas and cleaned up? 7. Work areas adequately illuminated? 8. Are safety goggles being worn daily? 9. Are wet floors being mopped? 10. Are safety valves tested regularly and frequently? 2. Would it be advisable for the firm to set up a procedure for screening out accident-prone individuals? How should they do so? Training and incentives can resolve this problem; however, this could raise ethical issues. Ultimately, the bottom line is to reward safe behavior as well as stressing the importance of safety repeatedly. 3. How would you suggest the Carters get all employees to behave more safely at work? Also how would you advise them to get those who should be wearing goggles to do so? The company should contact local government safety agency for assistance in developing safety policies and procedures on the job. The company should also make it clear that those who violate the policies will be disciplined, and then follow-up by doing it. If employees see that management is serious about it and that they will be disciplined, or even lose their jobs, they will begin to use them.

Guide to Control Charts
Question: 1. Describe the experience in the project. 2. What were the solutions used to address the problem? 3. Was the case you described a special-cause or common-cause? 4. Do you feel the solution or approach used appropriate for the cause? 5. What would you do if you could do it again? 6. What conclusions can you draw from the problem-solving or process-improvement techniques? Answer: Given, the company has collected The OTR time (time between placing the order and receipt of payment) data for various countries where it operates. Given below is the data of the OTR time and the country code for which the data was collected. Country Code Cycle Time Country Code Cycle Time 1 20 5 29 1 24 6 40 1 46 7 157 1 26 8 19 14 38 5 24 1 15 1 81 1 15 7 53 17 23 7 26 1 31 1 28 1 31 1 34 6 64 1 34 5 29 7 50 5 44 1 52 1 32 1 19 1 15 1 44 7 11 14 150 7 14 7 29 1 89 17 23 17 41 6 79 7 41 17 17 1 36 6 13 8 43 7 32 17 21 8 42 8 28 8 46 7 18 7 88 8 47 14 24 6 26 7 7 6 47 1 33 5 9 5 129 7 42 17 41 5 5 17 43 6 27 14 42 6 27 14 42 1 33 7 53 7 44 7 53 1 21 7 48 1 22 5 21 1 50 1 19 1. OTR time is defined as the time taken between placing an order and receiving its payment. For the 76 installations given below, the mean of installation time = Xi / n =38.93 and the standard deviation = 27.86. Thus it can be seen that the most of the data lies around the mean and is randomly distributed with no trend or pattern. Hence we can say that the data is stable. 2. To evaluate the stability of the OTR time, we will use X bar S chart. When the variable being measured is of continuous nature, we use x bar chart. Also since the sample size is different for all of the subgroups (country code) we use an S chart instead of R chart to evaluate the stability of the OTR time. (Martz, 2011) The UCL and LCL changes as the subgroup sizes are not equal. 3. The distribution of the cycle time is random and lies above and below the mean cycle time. The plot below gives idea about the distribution of cycle time. (Berardnelli, 2011) There are few points which are out of the control limits which make the data unstable. The data for the country code 7 and 14 have values which are out of the control limits and make the data unstable. 4. When we calculate the average cycle time for different Country codes, it can be seen that the average cycle time for the country code 17 is the least while the average cycle time of the country code 14 is the highest. Also the variation in the country code 14 is very high which makes the data very unstable. For all the other countries the variance is less and the data is randomly distributed and stable. Thus it can be said that the country code has an impact on the OTR time. Country Code Average Time 1 34.00 5 36.25 6 40.38 7 45.06 8 37.50 14 59.20 17 29.86 References Berardinelli, C. A. Wild animals free essay sample
People have been enchanted by the idea that even the wildest animals can befriend the right person. In reality, keeping a wild animal as a pet often has disastrous results for the animals and the people, yet wild and exotic animals continue to be imported into the US and sold to incompetent owners. While the opposition will argue that exotic pet ownership can provide safe and fulfilling environments for the animals. pet ownership should be banned because home captivity is unhealthy for the animals, it proposes a threat to public safety, and it proposes a threat to public safety. Stronger laws need to be in place to ban the private ownership of exotic animals. Appropriate care for exotic animals requires considerable expertise, specialized facilities, and lifelong dedication to the animals. Necessary care for exotic animals is rarely looked in to, including proper veterinary care, which can be very difficult since not many veterinarians are trained or have any experience with exotic animals. We will write a custom essay sample on Wild animals or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page It is relatively easy to purchase exotic animals through auctions, the internet, as well as in states which have no bans or registries. Many exotic animals are captured in inhumane ways (ââ¬Å"Exotic Animals as ââ¬ËPetsââ¬â¢ PETAâ⬠). Some wild animals, especially babies, are taken straight from their wild lands and shipped to the U. S (The Dirty Side of the Exotic Animal Pet Trade ). This is not only traumatic and sometimes deadly for the animals, but also for their species as a whole and for the ecosystems from which they came from(The Dirty Side of the Exotic Animal Pet Trade ). Although the opposition argues that keeping exotic animals captive will protect animals from becoming extinct, this is one of the reasons that some animals are in jeopardy of becoming extinct (ââ¬Å"Exotic Animal Ethicsâ⬠) . Baby tigers, for example, may be taken straight from their mothers by killing their mothers and taking the cubs. This clearly causes a decline in their population, trauma to the cub, and the beginning of a cycle of unhealthy practices for the animal(The Dirty Side of the Exotic Animal Pet Trade ). Many animals die before even reaching their destination (ââ¬Å"Exotic Animals as ââ¬ËPetsââ¬â¢ PETAâ⬠). As exotic animals grow and mature, their novelty wears off, along with the ownerââ¬â¢s interest. The animals lose their ââ¬Å"cutenessâ⬠as their tempers form and they become more aggressive, causing injuries and needing larger areas to live (Get the Factsâ⬠). Many of these animals are forced to live in deplorable conditions with barely enough area for them to walk (ââ¬Å"Exotic Animals as Pets ASPCAâ⬠) . Wild animals tend to walk up to several miles daily and many of these animals are kept in enclosures that barely fit the size of their bodies (ââ¬Å"Exotic Animals as Pets ASAPâ⬠). They are not given attention, fed proper diets, proper veterinary care and have lack of enrichment activities (ââ¬Å"Get the Factsâ⬠). These animals tend to show significant signs of dysfunctional minds by rapid, constant pacing, chewing on bars of their enclosures, as well as constant sleeping (ââ¬Å"Exotic Animals as Pets ASPCAâ⬠). All these factors cause great frustration for their owners as the animals become neglected and viewed as a burden. The animals, as a result, then become victims of malnourishment and abuse(ââ¬Å"Exotic Animals as ââ¬ËPetsââ¬â¢ PETAâ⬠). The Wildcat Sanctuary, an organization that rescues big cats has countless numbers of cat that were mistreated by their owners (ââ¬Å"Keep the Wild in Your Heart Not Your Homeâ⬠). Liberty, a cougar that was rescued was reported to be ââ¬Å"emaciated dehydrated.. fractures to both her back legs.. suffured from a severe curvature of the sprine and pelvisâ⬠¦ the top of her ears were dangling by a small amount of flesh and were about the fall off .. and she had urine burns on both sides of her legsâ⬠. It is hard to believe than an owner would let an animal suffer like this, but sadly it is very common. Getting medical care for these animals is very difficult as well. Most of the animals seem to hide there symptoms of illness and even when the illness is suspected, it is very difficult to find a vet who is equipped to help the animal (ââ¬Å"Exotic Animals as Pets ASPCAâ⬠). Animals are not only the ones put in danger when being help captive, humans are as well.

Coca-Colas Groundwater Pollution in India
Coca-Cola's Groundwater Pollution in India An ongoing drought has threatened groundwater supplies across India, and many villagers in rural areas are blaming Coca-Cola for aggravating the problem. Coca-Cola operates 58 water-intensive bottling plants in India. In the southern Indian village of Plachimada in Kerala state, for example, persistent droughts have dried up groundwater and local wells, forcing many residents to rely on water supplies trucked in daily by the government. Groundwater Problem Began Several Years Ago Some there link the lack of groundwater to the arrival of a Coca-Cola bottling plant in the area three years ago. Following several large protests, the local government revoked Coca-Colaââ¬â¢s license to operate last year and ordered the company to shut down its $25-million plant. Similar groundwater problems have plagued the company in the rural Indian state of Uttar Pradesh, where farming is the primary industry. Several thousand residents took part in a 10-day march in 2004 between two Coca-Cola bottling plants thought to be depleting groundwater. ââ¬Å"Drinking Coke is like drinking farmerââ¬â¢s blood in India,â⬠said protest organizer Nandlal Master. ââ¬Å"Coca-Cola is creating thirst in India, and is directly responsible for the loss of livelihood and even hunger for thousands of people across India,â⬠added Master, who represents the India Resource Center in the campaign against Coca-Cola. Indeed, one report, in the daily newspaper Mathrubhumi, described local women having to travel five kilometers (three miles) to obtain drinkable water, during which time soft drinks would come out of the Coca-Cola plant by the truckload. Coca-Cola Offers Sludge Fertilizer and Beverages with Pesticides Groundwater isnââ¬â¢t the only issue. The Central Pollution Control Board of ââ¬â¹India found in 2003 that sludge from Coca-Colaââ¬â¢s Uttar Pradesh factory was contaminated with high levels of cadmium, lead, and chromium.ââ¬â¹Ã¢â¬â¹ To make matters worse, Coca-Cola was offloading cadmium-laden waste sludge as ââ¬Å"free fertilizerâ⬠to tribal farmers who live near the plant, prompting questions as to why they would do that but not provide clean water to local residents whose underground supplies were being ââ¬Å"stolen.â⬠Another Indian nonprofit group, the Centre for Science and Environment (CSE), says it tested 57 carbonated beverages made by Coca-Cola and Pepsi at 25 bottling plants and found a ââ¬Å"cocktail of between three to five different pesticides in all samples.â⬠CSE Director Sunita Narain, the winner of the 2005 Stockholm Water Prize, described the groupââ¬â¢s findings as ââ¬Å"a grave public health scandal.â⬠Coca-Cola Responds to Charges of Pollution and Groundwater Depletion For its part, Coca-Cola says that ââ¬Å"a small number of politically motivated groupsâ⬠are going after the company ââ¬Å"for the furtherance of their own anti-multinational agenda.â⬠It denies that its actions in India have contributed to depleting local aquifers, and calls allegations ââ¬Å"without any scientific basis.â⬠Citing excessive groundwater pumping, in 2014, Indian government officials ordered closed the Mehdiganj plant in the state of Uttar Pradesh. Since that time, Coca-Cola has undertaken a water replacement program, but unusually dry monsoons highlight the reality that water depletion continues to be a serious issue.

The Evil Dead Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
The Evil Dead - Essay Example The film released in the year 1981, under the direction of Sam Raimi, who created this masterpiece on a very low-budget; which becomes quite obvious with the screenplay and special effects. However, the plotline was quite novel, which caused the original release to quickly rise to fame and it was also dubbed as one of the ââ¬Ëbest cult movieââ¬â¢. Besides the plotline and the eerie scenario that the film was shot, other reasons for its success included outstanding monster design and its subtle and witty sense of humor in the script. The Evil Dead was originally meant to have only two films, but with the ever-expanding fan base, the number of movie installments was increased as well. With the fan following increasing at such a rapid pace even in the face of contemporary horror movies, it was only a matter of time before a contemporary remake was on its way. The remake was not entirely based on the original series and considering the bigger budget, the special effects were far more superior to the previous one. The original release included scare tactics that turned out to be more comical in nature than scary for the contemporary audience, which can only be explained through the lack of funds for the first film. Even the plotline was slightly different, as in the original plot the group of friends head there for leisure activities during spring break, the remake includes a group of friends trying to help one of their friends recover from a drug addiction. There a number of factors that can be taken against this entire franchise; for instance, there is no consistency between of the remake with the original film, which can be quite boggling at times. The original has strict acting with the use of humor from time to time and the lack of sophisticated CGI effects can be attributed to obsolete technology and low budget. The remake follows the same storyline, except for the fact that the beginning involves a vague reference to the back-story of the demonic possession. Similar to the original, the movie has a number of twists and constantly shows the possessed characters going back and forth between their normal forms to their possessed form. However, the characters have more depth than the origina l release as the characters seem to have a valid reason for not believing Mia, which was quite obscure when Cheryl claimed that there was a supernatural presence in their midst. Besides the extremely eerie premise of the movie, there are plenty of parts in the movie that is quite terrifying, but sometimes the excessive use of blood makes one cringe in disgust rather than scream with fear. The displaying and exaggeration of wounds and cuts is an over-used scare tactic throughout the movie. For instance, when one of the characters licks a box cutter and cuts her tongue in half, and there is one another scene where the characterââ¬â¢s eyes are stabbed with needles and limbs are detached with an electric carving knife (Evil Dead, 2012). On the more positive note the action choreography was outstanding. The effects seemed real and animate enough to be believable that gave the movie a much-needed advantage at the box-office. For once, the directors did not simply rely on the tried and tested techniques used by Hollywood, which involved frivolous college students, who find themselves trapped in a haunted cabin. The characters were all quite believable and their reactions were that of serious adults; which showed that the vacation was not simply a pretext for their sexual trysts, but they had gone to the cabin in order to help their friend, which enabled the audience to sympathize with them as well. The actors were able to
